„The mother“ is part of a larger body of works around the subject of relationships between people of different ages. I take an interest in that topic in a time when so called „intergenerational conflict“ is a buzzword in describing political conflict in (German) society. I seek to take a closer look on the difficulties and potentials of cross-generational bonds and complicity beyond family structures.

In „The mother“ I take a preliminary look at relationships between people of different ages around me, through the lense of association with a mother archetype. I try to picture ways of relating to one another by using some of the visual language from my painting series.

A sketch research in my terms is a first glance at a topic or aspect that I try to explore and understand with my existing visual language, adding new elements if i feel I need to. The term mother evokes a lot of ambivalent thoughts for me, as it is linked to many ideas of normative femininity. Sketch researches allow me to stay within my ambivalence and explore it.
